OCR GCSE Business Studies – Curriculum Intent 2024-2026
Business studies is a rich and varied subject that prepares students for all aspects of working life. No matter what industry students eventually find themselves in after the completion of their studies, to work successfully and understand the nature of working in any organisation with other people is relevant to all. Business studies is a broad and fascinating subject that evolves as the world that we live in as future employers, entrepreneurs, managers, employees, and consumers does so too. Business studies underpins almost any working role and as such can help students on their journeys to exciting and well-paid careers and future study.
This qualification provides the opportunity to explore real business issues and business functions. Students will consider the practical application of business concepts whilst adopting a holistic approach to the subject, the course demonstrates the interrelated nature of business using business models, theories, and techniques to support analysis of contemporary business issues and situations to provide a dynamic curriculum. The depth and breadth of the content is designed to engage and inspire students through topics and issues that are relevant today. Students study key contemporary developments such as the impact of globalisation, digital technology, the drive of invention and innovation and increasing responsibility in regard to environment and ethics including the growth of social enterprise and not for profit businesses. Consideration of how and why businesses make decisions is a key focus of study. The curriculum focusses on developing resilient learners who can problem solve, express opinions with justification, work with others and develop confidence in business finance calculations. We endeavour to make the curriculum as fun and interesting as possible with a high level of challenge by offering breadth and depth of experiences in the curriculum for the students to motivate their active engagement and inspire them to be successful in business or even the next famous Entrepreneur! Our aim is to ensure that students develop key practical and theoretical skills and business understanding that is directly transferable, not only to other subjects, but also post 16.
As a broad subject in the social sciences, business studies field of study includes specialties such as accountancy, finance, organisational management, human resources management, operations and production and marketing. As such it prepares students for lifelong learning in the fields of business and management and equips students with the know-how to start a business including a side-hustle, choose a career in finance, human resources, operations, marketing, or management. Through Business Studies GCSE, students engage with the world of business through the context of current business developments and real business situations. Students explore the interrelated nature of business activities and how they affect businesses – large or small, UK or internationally focussed and in different sectors such as service or manufacturing. A range of sources are used including quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate strategic and functional options as well as understanding how decisions affect different stakeholders and how stakeholders may respond. You’ll also develop your critical analysis, decision-making and problem-solving skills through challenging content and case studies.
