British Values

Stowmarket High School is committed to embedding and promoting British Values through its broad, balanced, inclusive curriculum. The five key British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Our students are expected to treat each other with RESPECT daily, in line with the School’s core values and Behaviour policy.

Democracy: In Stowmarket High School, students have numerous opportunities to have their voices heard and the chance to listen to the opinions of their peers in a respectful and controlled environment. We also compete in the Suffollk Youth Parliament every year and the Make Your Mark competition.

The Rule of Law: Throughout the school day the importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, the local community or the country, are consistently reinforced through the school’s behaviour policy, our Assembly programme as well as when dealing with issues of behaviour and conduct when students are expected to accept responsibility for their actions.

Individual Liberty: At Stowmarket High School  we value and strive to consistently create a safe, supportive and positive culture where students are actively encouraged to make choices based on their interests and aspirations to inspire excellence. The school offers a range of extra-curricular opportunities. Within the PSHE/Citizenship, RE &Citizenship students learn about their rights and personal freedoms and are encouraged and advised on how to exercise these freedoms safely.

Mutual Respect: Mutual respect is at the heart of our ethos and is one of our key Core Values which is built upon positive and trusting relationships. All members of our school community treat each other with respect. This can be seen in the professional relationships formed between our students, our staff, parents, carers, local businesses and other education and training providers.

Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs: The curriculum in Stowmarekt High School is culturally diverse. Our RE, PSHE, SMSC and Assembly programme strive to demonstrate tolerance and respect of others. Our curriculum and school daily routines develop our pupil’s knowledge and understanding of cultural diversity and embed it into the work of the school.

Many of the British Values are further developed in other subject areas throughout their individual curriculums.
