Religious Studies and Citizenship

Here at Stowmarket High School, we teach a combination of religious studies and citizenship from year 7-10, the students are taught a combination of philosophy, theology and sociology, the curriculum has been designed to be a spiral with each year developing and building on the previous year’s learning, we start in year 7 by looking at ourselves, then spirals outwards from this point into society and culture, year 8 spirals out again into the environment and human rights, year 9 then looks at crime and concepts of evil and suffering. With year 10 looking at wider issues such as prejudice and discrimination and what is real? Which explores our perception of reality, which returns to the starting point in year 7, looking at ourselves and our concept of reality. Each topic has elements of religious, philosophical and sociological viewpoints which are explored within the context of that area. This is not an examination subject, but each topic has a stand-alone booklet, each topic is assessed for understanding and progress.

Right of withdrawal:

Parents (or students who are over 18) have the right to withdraw their children either partly or wholly from RE. In addition, teachers have the right not to teach the subject. Our approach to RE, however, has been constructed in the hope that parents and teachers will rarely, if ever, wish to exercise their right of withdrawal.

If you have any questions about this curriculum, please email Ms Faye Hubbard – f.hubbard@stowhigh.com
